The “Lights of the City” will return to the old town from December 29, 2023 to January 14, 2024. The image and video projections on the facades invite you to take a discovery tour through the city center every day between 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m Walk-in light installation offers space for New Year's wishes and thoughts.
For the fourth time in a row, we are letting the facades of prominent buildings in Bremen city center shine every day at the turn of the year. Under this year's motto " Play of Colors" , visitors can discover impressive image and video projections at nine locations as they walk from building to building. A new highlight this year: a walk-in light installation entitled Time Drifts Bremen. At the end there will be “The Little Lights,” a cooperation with the Bremer Karneval eV initiative
The buildings illuminated by various artists include the Schütting, St. Petri Cathedral and Domshof, the Church of Our Lady - including its church tower -, Sögestraße 17-19, Obernstraße 45-47, Obernstraße 90-98, Am Wall 144 and also the Dechanatstraße 13: Here, at the entrance to the Schnoor, the facade of the University of the Arts will shine in a new look thanks to a study project by the HFK.
After the second weekend, the motif changes, so there is always something new to experience. “The Lights of the City” have become a real magnet in the dark season and allow visitors to discover the architecture and districts of the old town again and again.
A new highlight awaits visitors at the Domshof. Here, the renowned Berlin artist Philipp Geist is developing a poetic, picturesque light-video installation on the facade of Bremen's St. Petri Cathedral and on the floor in front of it - the installation Time Drifts Bremen. In this walk-in light installation, the people of Bremen should become part of the projection. “The idea is to actively involve people in the design of the artwork and make them an integral part of the light-video installation. "I will use December to collect New Year's greetings as well as impressions and thoughts about the Hanseatic city," says Philipp Geist. From December 1st, 2023, people from Bremen can send their New Year's greetings and thoughts about Bremen to lichterdercity@videogeist.de . The artist also invites you on Saturday, December 2nd from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. for portrait recordings in the Ansgari winter forest in the Ansgarikirchhof. During the festival of lights, the received words will be projected onto the floor of the cathedral courtyard, and the portraits will be projected onto the facade of Bremen Cathedral. A place where The people of Bremen can find each other again.
The University of the Arts will shine through changing image and video projections as part of “Lights of the City”. This is an independent study project by HFK students under the direction of Lorenz Potthast.
At the end of the event, on January 13th, 2024 from 5:30 p.m., “The Little Lights Bustle”, a cooperation with the Initiative Bremer Karneval eV, promises a special finale: Illuminated mask and stilt creations will be located between the light illuminations and in the Our Dear women move the church and re-stage the rooms.
